Meet ViaSat at EFB Users Forum, Vienna, June 13 – 15, 2017

The EFB Users Forum is one of our favourite events, as it’s a great opportunity to learn more about airlines’ experiences with electronic flight bags, and also to help guide the future direction of our industry.

The forum is the key event for airlines, system integrators, hardware and software providers, regulators, and other interested parties to present and discuss topics of interest to the user community. Of particular interest to the ViaSat team are the sessions on user experiences, where we get to learn, in detail, how and why electronic flight bags are so useful to airlines and the issues that need to be resolved to make them do an even better job. We use these sessions to help drive our product development process

A Dubliner’s View on Visiting the Carlsbad Campus

The Dublin sales and marketing team had a very successful week of meetings, workshops and strategic planning sessions at ViaSat Inc.’s corporate headquarters in Carlsbad, California last week. All eyes are on AIX 2017 (Hamburg, Germany, 4 – 6 April 2017), as a platform to tell the aviation world the compelling story of how ViaSat in-flight internet and onboard entertainment enables the accelerating trend towards personal device entertainment and complements our suite of operational apps.

More value for airlines

San-Diego-airport-Southwest.jpgThis is a big story, as you can tell. Luckily, the acquisition of Arconics by ViaSat brings together a wide selection of great people, skills and resources, plus a unified vision that helps bring us closer every day. The vision is all about delivering the best possible value to our customers and enabling the world’s greatest airlines to resolve a wide variety of challenges with in-flight internet, wireless IFE and operational apps.

ViaSat and Southern California

We flew to San Diego with Aer Lingus and United. The ViaSat campus is in Carlsbad, just a short drive north of San Diego, in a beautiful setting between the hills and the Pacific. We spent a lot of time with our colleagues in the Commercial Mobility, Aviation building, conveniently located next to Palomar Airport, so there’s
never a dull moment, with private jets and small aircraft flying by every few minutes. The team there is so welcoming, we felt right at home in seconds. Having a slide in the office to travel between floors helps too!

Over in the main building (one of over a dozen buildings on campus, with more in planning), we got to do some great work with the design team and met with really interesting people from many sections of the company. ViaSat’s ethos, and its focus on looking after its people, was evident in the details, from the rock music
playing from speakers on the palm tree-lined routes between buildings (we heard Thin Lizzy and U2 in the mix), to the on-tap orange juice and fresh-brewed coffee, to the incredible Hub, a place for ViaSat team members to connect, eat and relax in the sun. And the sun? We’d timed our visit well because, after having endured some days of rain and grey, our Californian friends brought the SoCal sun back for us. And it was just perfect.

Connecting apps and in-flight internet to deliver awesomeness

Aer-Lingus-San-Francisco-Arconics-ViaSat-Gary-Byrnes.jpgWe made super progress in planning how best we can work together over the coming years, to tell our incredible story to the airline industry. Watch this space (or sign up for our newsletter here) and we’ll keep you posted on the many awesome developments that are in the pipeline. And if I was to sum up California and ViaSat in one word, it would be that: Awesome.

Working on getting back to see the team at Carlsbad already…

Santa-Claus-Sleigh-Connectivity-Arconics-ViaSat-EFB

Sleigh Connectivity Delivered to Santa Claus by ViaSat

Learn more: Santa Claus selects ViaSat sleigh connectivity

We just got a call on our red phone from the North Pole’s most famous aviator – Santa Claus. After much ho-ho-ho-ing, he told us that he’s done the research, accepts that the future will be connected, and feels the need for immediate sleigh connectivity. Surely it would make sense for the electronic flight bag on the sleigh (our AeroEFB product, which Santa selected last year) to integrate with sleigh data and then send it back to North Pole base in real-time? We agreed. So the Arconics integration elves got to work…

We’re so proud that our most famous EFB customer came back to us to take the next step to satellite connectivity! Now that Arconics is part of ViaSat, we can offer a fully-connected aviation app suite, with connectivity across the sleigh (including the SID, Sleigh Interface Device), into the EFB and with direct data links back to base.

Santa connects to the ViaSat satellite network so that he can catch up on his favourite non-linear TV shows and movies on the long flight legs across the wilderness. He can also stay connected to his base in North Pole for any naughty/nice updates and even feed data from his sleigh back to the elves in Flight Ops so they know where he is and how the sleigh is performing. The Flight Ops elves can also send weather updates in real-time. Santa’s connected! It’s kind of magical!

Santa’s EFB

Sleigh – Manuals/Minimum Equipment List

What would Santa do if Rudolph’s red nose stopped working? Luckily, the Sleigh’s full suite of operating manuals (OEM and elf-produced), including MEL tells him exactly how to react.

Santa’s MEL outlines all the necessary equipment he need for a successful Christmas Eve, including:

  • Reindeer X 8 (Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen).
  • Rudolph X 1 – essential for his integrated anti-collision light system.
  • Back-up anti-collision light systems.
  • Back-up back-up anti-collision lights.
  • Bells, to make those cute jingly bell sounds.
  • Magic power source.

Santa-EFB-CHART-newest.png

Santa’s EFB

Sleigh – Charts

We tried to do the math about how fast Santa needs to travel, including all those tricky take-offs and landings, so he can make every delivery across racing time zones. But our heads started to hurt.

With handy charts on his EFB, Santa knows that he’ll have the best chance possible of maximising his efficiency on Christmas Eve. Santa’s charts include:

  • North Pole take-off runway, with reindeer zones and Aurora zone well-marked. This is especially useful on the return leg, as Santa will be fairly exhausted by sunrise on Christmas Day.
  • Toilet rest stop locations, because all those little drinks and snacks soon add up.
  • Fresh carrot patches in the southern hemisphere so the reindeer can stay at maximum performance.

Santa-EFB-weather-newest-iPad.png

Santa’s EFF

Sleigh – Weather/Flight Plans

It’s critical that Santa has his finger on the pulse with a clear view of weather activity all around the globe. He’ll be taking off from an area where temperatures can get down to -9C/15F, with snowstorms a daily occurrence. Last Christmas (Hi George!), AeroDocs EFB weather was updated dynamically whenever Santa he got within range of wifi. This year, with full satellite connectivity to his sleigh, weather updates can be constantly updated, wherever on the planet he may be.

Along with weather, Santa’s Electronic Flight Folder – EFF – includes Flight Plans so that Santa has his routes optimised.

Santa needs to access multiple weather resources, including:

  •  Jet stream location. Avoid this when travelling west.
  • Blizzards, so he doesn’t miss a single chimney.
  • Black ice, because slippery landings may cause toy loss.

We’ve been revamping our EFB, in response to Santa’s data demands and customer needs, and are delighted to bring it to market for 2017. You can check out our AeroDocs EFB page, request a demo or download our Aer Lingus case study here: https://www.arconics.com/efb-eff-aerodocs/

Let us know if we can help you to deliver a genuinely paperless cockpit, data EFB, wireless IFE, cabin management and full satcom connectivity across your fleet in 2017. Arconics connectivity solutions mean that there’s no need for elves or Santa’s magic to help everyone in your airline perform more efficiently and to keep your passengers coming back again and again!

The Arconics crew would like to wish you, your family and your colleagues a Happy Holiday season and best wishes for a great new year. We look forward to staying in touch in 2017.

ViaSat Acquires Arconics for Added Aircraft Operations Capabilities

  • ViaSat Gains Connected Aircraft Software, Wireless In-flight Entertainment, Mobile Applications and Airline Document Management Expertise
  • Arconics Brings A Complementary Set of Existing Commercial Airline Customers, Including Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Among Others

CARLSBAD, Calif. and DUBLIN, November 14, 2016 – ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global broadband services and technology company, today announced it acquired Arconics, an innovative provider of software solutions to the aviation industry. Through this acquisition ViaSat gains broader expertise, aviation-grade software and mobile applications to make flying safer and more efficient for pilots, cabin crews and flight operations teams as well as applications that make entertaining passengers and opening new service and revenue opportunities for airlines possible.

The Arconics connected aircraft software platform enables the Arconics App Suite, which spans wireless In-flight Entertainment (IFE), Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), Airline Document Management and Cabin Management solutions, to communicate and share data with the aircraft and, using available connectivity, to connect with ground systems across mobile or avionics platforms. Today, tens of thousands of pilots, ground staff and cabin crew members across five continents depend on Arconics software to safely and efficiently operate their fleets. Airline customers include: Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Philippine Airlines, Tigerair Australia, SpiceJet and others.

“By acquiring Arconics, we are bolstering our ability to serve the global aviation market,” said Don Buchman, vice president and general manager, Commercial Mobility business, ViaSat. “We believe combining our strengths with Arconics will position ViaSat to be the market leader for connectivity, passenger services and flight deck applications and operations.”

Prior to the acquisition, Arconics had a partnership with ViaSat, primarily focused on serving the wireless IFE needs of multiple airline customers. Post-acquisition, ViaSat expects to also offer airlines real-time insight, control and agility of aircraft and flight data with highly-integrated, highly-customizable aircraft operations tools that tap into the power of ViaSat’s advanced high capacity Ka-band satellite network, which has more capacity in orbit than any other in-flight WiFi provider.

“ViaSat offers Arconics a strategic match – both culturally and technologically,” said Arconics Chief Executive Officer Niall O’Sullivan. “We know ViaSat well, having partnered with them on a number of opportunities to deliver our world-class CloudStore wireless IFE product. Together, we believe the complementary nature of the technologies and products of Arconics and ViaSat will enhance the combined company’s ability to deliver exceptional end-to-end experiences across the entire aircraft value-chain.”

In connection with the acquisition, ViaSat establishes a presence in Dublin, Ireland, and will continue to build its operations in Sydney, Australia. More than 30 Arconics team members with both technical and business expertise will join ViaSat, including Niall O’Sullivan. IBI Corporate Finance advised Arconics on the transaction. The transaction is not expected to materially affect ViaSat non-GAAP (pro forma) earnings for fiscal year 2017. However, ViaSat has not completed its valuation analysis and, accordingly, has not determined the impact to GAAP earnings.
