A Dubliner’s View on Visiting the Carlsbad Campus

The Dublin sales and marketing team had a very successful week of meetings, workshops and strategic planning sessions at ViaSat Inc.’s corporate headquarters in Carlsbad, California last week. All eyes are on AIX 2017 (Hamburg, Germany, 4 – 6 April 2017), as a platform to tell the aviation world the compelling story of how ViaSat in-flight internet and onboard entertainment enables the accelerating trend towards personal device entertainment and complements our suite of operational apps.

More value for airlines

San-Diego-airport-Southwest.jpgThis is a big story, as you can tell. Luckily, the acquisition of Arconics by ViaSat brings together a wide selection of great people, skills and resources, plus a unified vision that helps bring us closer every day. The vision is all about delivering the best possible value to our customers and enabling the world’s greatest airlines to resolve a wide variety of challenges with in-flight internet, wireless IFE and operational apps.

ViaSat and Southern California

We flew to San Diego with Aer Lingus and United. The ViaSat campus is in Carlsbad, just a short drive north of San Diego, in a beautiful setting between the hills and the Pacific. We spent a lot of time with our colleagues in the Commercial Mobility, Aviation building, conveniently located next to Palomar Airport, so there’s
never a dull moment, with private jets and small aircraft flying by every few minutes. The team there is so welcoming, we felt right at home in seconds. Having a slide in the office to travel between floors helps too!

Over in the main building (one of over a dozen buildings on campus, with more in planning), we got to do some great work with the design team and met with really interesting people from many sections of the company. ViaSat’s ethos, and its focus on looking after its people, was evident in the details, from the rock music
playing from speakers on the palm tree-lined routes between buildings (we heard Thin Lizzy and U2 in the mix), to the on-tap orange juice and fresh-brewed coffee, to the incredible Hub, a place for ViaSat team members to connect, eat and relax in the sun. And the sun? We’d timed our visit well because, after having endured some days of rain and grey, our Californian friends brought the SoCal sun back for us. And it was just perfect.

Connecting apps and in-flight internet to deliver awesomeness

Aer-Lingus-San-Francisco-Arconics-ViaSat-Gary-Byrnes.jpgWe made super progress in planning how best we can work together over the coming years, to tell our incredible story to the airline industry. Watch this space (or sign up for our newsletter here) and we’ll keep you posted on the many awesome developments that are in the pipeline. And if I was to sum up California and ViaSat in one word, it would be that: Awesome.

Working on getting back to see the team at Carlsbad already…

ViaSat Acquires Arconics for Added Aircraft Operations Capabilities

  • ViaSat Gains Connected Aircraft Software, Wireless In-flight Entertainment, Mobile Applications and Airline Document Management Expertise
  • Arconics Brings A Complementary Set of Existing Commercial Airline Customers, Including Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Among Others

CARLSBAD, Calif. and DUBLIN, November 14, 2016 – ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global broadband services and technology company, today announced it acquired Arconics, an innovative provider of software solutions to the aviation industry. Through this acquisition ViaSat gains broader expertise, aviation-grade software and mobile applications to make flying safer and more efficient for pilots, cabin crews and flight operations teams as well as applications that make entertaining passengers and opening new service and revenue opportunities for airlines possible.

The Arconics connected aircraft software platform enables the Arconics App Suite, which spans wireless In-flight Entertainment (IFE), Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), Airline Document Management and Cabin Management solutions, to communicate and share data with the aircraft and, using available connectivity, to connect with ground systems across mobile or avionics platforms. Today, tens of thousands of pilots, ground staff and cabin crew members across five continents depend on Arconics software to safely and efficiently operate their fleets. Airline customers include: Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Philippine Airlines, Tigerair Australia, SpiceJet and others.

“By acquiring Arconics, we are bolstering our ability to serve the global aviation market,” said Don Buchman, vice president and general manager, Commercial Mobility business, ViaSat. “We believe combining our strengths with Arconics will position ViaSat to be the market leader for connectivity, passenger services and flight deck applications and operations.”

Prior to the acquisition, Arconics had a partnership with ViaSat, primarily focused on serving the wireless IFE needs of multiple airline customers. Post-acquisition, ViaSat expects to also offer airlines real-time insight, control and agility of aircraft and flight data with highly-integrated, highly-customizable aircraft operations tools that tap into the power of ViaSat’s advanced high capacity Ka-band satellite network, which has more capacity in orbit than any other in-flight WiFi provider.

“ViaSat offers Arconics a strategic match – both culturally and technologically,” said Arconics Chief Executive Officer Niall O’Sullivan. “We know ViaSat well, having partnered with them on a number of opportunities to deliver our world-class CloudStore wireless IFE product. Together, we believe the complementary nature of the technologies and products of Arconics and ViaSat will enhance the combined company’s ability to deliver exceptional end-to-end experiences across the entire aircraft value-chain.”

In connection with the acquisition, ViaSat establishes a presence in Dublin, Ireland, and will continue to build its operations in Sydney, Australia. More than 30 Arconics team members with both technical and business expertise will join ViaSat, including Niall O’Sullivan. IBI Corporate Finance advised Arconics on the transaction. The transaction is not expected to materially affect ViaSat non-GAAP (pro forma) earnings for fiscal year 2017. However, ViaSat has not completed its valuation analysis and, accordingly, has not determined the impact to GAAP earnings.

Embrace Your Inner AvGeek – How to be an Aviation Geek

AVIATION – IT’S A HEALTHY OBSESSION

Loving aviation is now such a popular hobby, it’s got an official name. If you love anything to do with planes, you’re an avgeek. The hashtag #avgeek is commonly used on Twitter to help identify stories about aviation or aircraft. But is ‘geek’ appropriate? Let’s face it, aviation is sexy, and everyone loves planes, so avgeekery is about as far from the nerdiness of trainspotting as it’s possible to get. If you always feel the urge to look up when a plane passes, wondering what kind of aircraft it is and where it’s going, the good news is that there are answers out there. You just need to forget the etymology and embrace your inner avgeek. We’ll show you how…

THE OLD SCHOOL ESSENTIALS

observers-book.jpgAir band radio scanner – So you can listen in on pilots as they chat with air traffic control.

Binoculars – Because airports will only allow you to get so close to the aircraft.

Reference books – We all remember the ubiquitous Observer’s Book of Aircraft. Publication has ceased, so pick them up in car boot sales whenever possible. Most referencing is done online these days, but there’s still a good selection of printed guides and coffee table books available.

AVIATION ACTIVITIES

Hang around the airport at the weekend. Dublin Airport has some superb locations for planespotting – check out the R108 around the far side of the runway (airport side of IKEA roundabout off the M50) – and every airport has a similar offering. Hanging around the departures hall is not so much fun and you could get arrested.

Travel just for the fun of it! This might sound insane but, in the olden days, flying was considered a glamorous pursuit, an end in itself. Some LCCs may have tried to remove all the sophistication and excitement from flying but avgeeks know that they will never succeed.

Book specific flights just to fly on individual aircraft.

Bore all your friends by constantly talking about aviation…

FINALLY, BUILD A CAREER IN AViATION…

Get paid and build a career out of talking about aviation! It’s easier than you might think. For starters, there’s a major, growing shortage of airline pilots and cabin crew are always in demand. Then think about the legions of men and women who work on the ground to keep the aircraft flying and the airports operational 24/7. In Ireland, we’ve
got all the world’s top aircraft leasing companies, and they’re always looking for the right talent. Then you’ve got support companies like Arconics, the world’s leading airline software provider, working with some of the world’s most successful, profitable and best-loved airlines and always looking for talent, talent that’s not afraid to be called… avgeek!
