Aviation Industry Awards

Arconics shortlisted for the Aviation Innovation Award

Arconics are delighted to be shortlisted for the Irish Aviation Authority Aviation Industry Awards 2015 in the category of Aviation Innovation for its AeroDocs EFB content management product.

Arconics set about extending its AeroDocs product as a solution for flight crews to becoming one key element of a complete nose-to-tail e-Enablement platform, on which several mobile applications could be installed – for flight crews, cabin crews, passengers, engineers and airline management and administrative staff.

The first customer of the expanded platform was Aer Lingus, an airline with a long tradition of IT innovation.

With results such as lower costs, reduced timescales, reduced workload, improved audit compliance and better staff awareness, both Aer Lingus and Arconics consider the project a great success given the high level of acceptance from flight crews within Aer Lingus.

Further, the regulator has allowed Aer Lingus to remove paper copies of manuals from the aircraft, saving some 35-40kg per aircraft, per flight –a significant weight and hence cost saving for the airline.

Such was the success of the platform, in 2014 it was purchased by Cathay Pacific Airways, the flag carrier of Hong Kong.

Arconics will also announce another customer for the platform in June 2015 – a top-tier and one of the fastest growing airlines in the world with some of the newest aircraft flying today.

Arconics at the AIX EXPO 2015

AIX 2015 in Hamburg was a great show for Arconics. The calibre of the attendees from airlines all over the world was impressive.  We had about forty meetings over the three days of the event, and were tired but happy as we left Hamburg on Friday morning. We’d like to thank the organizers for doing such a superb job.

Arconics Stand

For us, the key learning points from AIX are that aircraft operators understand the operational savings and efficiencies that mobile devices can bring to the cockpit, cabin and on the ground, and see the potential for wireless IFE to drive loyalty and ancillary revenues over the entire journey.  The primary barriers to adoption for many airlines are the long development and implementation times for traditional mobile apps, and difficulties integrating them with each other and with existing enterprise applications. The Arconics Platform provides a proven, powerful, and flexible infrastructure to solve these problems, reducing costs and time-to-service, and providing deep real-time insight and analytics to the business.

CloudStore UI

CloudStore UI

The advent of powerful low-cost mobile devices creates an opportunity for airlines to transform inflight service and make cabin operations and related maintenance more efficient. Cabin crew are the primary touch point between airlines and passengers. Their ability to deliver personalised and better service can create extraordinary moments for passengers, resulting in long-term loyalty. Our PaxApp cabin management application gives cabin crew access to all of the information they need to serve passengers better, and provide timely information to any of the airline’s existing ground systems.

On the revenue side, air transport is evolving. Rapid changes in consumer behaviour and mobile technologies will change how airlines serve and compete. Mobile commerce is growing at 40% year on year. In a few short years, the vast majority of transactions and time online will be from mobile devices. This presents extraordinary opportunities for airlines. Few other industries have the customer insight, loyalty and trust that airlines have earned. No other industry has comparable uninterrupted time with their customers while delivering service.

Operators are starting to recognize that the mobile revolution that occurred on the ground can and will transform the airline passenger experience in the air – from pre-booking to post-journey, and also create extraordinary ancillary revenue opportunities and deeper loyalty and customer relationships – all key elements of CloudStore.

Niall O'Sullivan - CEO

Many IFE systems on the market miss this crucial point. They offer incremental improvement in the passenger experience onboard, but do not give airlines the real-time insight, control and commercial and technical flexibility to move the needle on the corporate bottom line.

We showed the end-to-end CloudStore IFE platform to many operators, and it was enormously gratifying to see that the problems that we’ve solved and the revenue opportunities that CloudStore creates resonate deeply with commercial, IFE, retail, and marketing executives in flag carriers, LCCs and regional and charter operators worldwide.

Falling hardware and connectivity costs will make 2015 the year when many airlines begin to deploy streaming IFE.  But that’s just the first act. Aircraft operators are beginning to recognize that streaming IFE isn’t IFE at all.  When delivered on a platform that rewrites the rules and enables new services, streaming IFE will become a cornerstone in every airline’s mobile strategy for the foreseeable future.

#PaxEx podcast on Gulf Competition and Cyber Suspicions

Tune in to listen to Michael Reilly who serves as vice president of e-enablement and entertainment at Arconics, talk to Mary Kirby and Max Flight at #RunwayGirl Network #PaxEx Podcast about Gulf competition to the American carriers, FAA plans to tackle cyber security concerns and will wireless ultimately replace embedded IFE systems.

It would have been difficult to miss the recent dust up between Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson and Gulf carriers. Anderson claims Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways enjoy an unfair competitive advantage over US carriers in the form of government subsidies. And Gulf carriers have hit back, saying US carriers have been able to restructure their costs under the USA’s liberal Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. But the row begs broader questions. Co-hosts Max Flight and Mary Kirby discuss whether US carriers can compete with Gulf carriers in terms of product, and overall #PaxEx, and whether the restructuring of labor costs under Chapter 11 has, somewhat ironically, put US operators at a competitive disadvantage in terms of customer service.

Now that more and more aircraft are “e-enabled”, the FAA has announced plans to establish an industry working group to tackle cyber security concerns. While it seems inexplicable that the FAA has waited until 2015 to launch this initiative, Max, Mary and Michael agree that it’s ‘better late than never’. They talk about what the FAA hopes to gain, and Michael shares his knowledge about the challenges airlines face in keeping the bad guys at bay as they move forward with significant change in the digital space.

Last but not least, Indian start-up Vistara has announced plans to “beam IFE directly to passengers’ devices”. Michael, an expert in the field of wireless IFE, tells us why these solutions are gaining traction, and he answers the multi-billion dollar question – will wireless ultimately replace embedded IFE systems?
